Over/Under, also known as totals betting, is a popular wagering option in baseball. Instead of predicting the winner, you bet on whether the total combined runs scored by both teams will be over or under a number set by the sportsbook. This guide breaks down the rules, how it works, and strategies to consider.
How the Over/Under Line Works
Sportsbooks establish a run total line (e.g., 8.5 runs). You then choose:
- Over: You’re betting the combined runs scored by both teams will exceed the set number.
- Under: You’re betting the combined runs scored by both teams will be less than the set number.
The “.5” is crucial. It eliminates the possibility of a “push” (tie). A total of 8.5 means you can’t bet on exactly 8 runs. It must be 9 or more for the Over to win, or 8 or fewer for the Under.
Example
Let’s say the Over/Under line for a game between the Yankees and Red Sox is 9.5 runs.
- Scenario 1: Yankees score 5 runs, Red Sox score 6 runs. Total = 11 runs. Over wins.
- Scenario 2: Yankees score 3 runs, Red Sox score 4 runs. Total = 7 runs. Under wins.
- Scenario 3: Yankees score 4 runs, Red Sox score 5 runs. Total = 9 runs. Under wins.
Extra Innings & Official Games
A key rule: extra innings do count towards the total. If the game goes into extra innings, all runs scored, including those in extras, are included in the final total.
However, a game must go a full 9 innings (or 7 innings if it’s a doubleheader game) to be considered “official” for betting purposes, unless the sportsbook specifies otherwise. If a game is called early due to weather or other reasons before it becomes official, the rules vary (see below).
What Happens if a Game is Called Early?
This is where it gets tricky. Sportsbook rules differ, so always check the specific rules of the book you’re using. Common scenarios:
- Under 5 Innings Completed: Bets are typically voided (refunded).
- 5-8.5 Innings Completed: The Under usually wins, as the game didn’t have a chance to reach the total.
- 9+ Innings Completed: The result stands, even if the game was shortened.
Factors to Consider When Betting
- Pitching Matchup: Strong pitchers generally lead to lower-scoring games.
- Batting Lineups: Powerful offenses suggest a higher potential for runs.
- Park Factors: Some ballparks are more hitter-friendly than others.
- Weather: Wind, rain, and temperature can all impact scoring.
- Recent Trends: Look at how teams have been performing offensively and defensively.
Odds & Payouts
Over/Under bets typically have odds of -110 (meaning you need to bet $110 to win $100). However, odds can vary based on the perceived likelihood of the outcome. You might see lines like -120 or +100.
